Ok, so you want to catch Black Sea Bass? Let us see - the keys are water temperature and structure, structure, structure! These are the two most important things to consider if you want to catch your quota of sea bass - legal size for Maryland is 12.5 inches with a creel limit of 25 per person per day. Make sure you verify this information each year, because this may change slightly from year to year.

[Proposed changes for the 2014 regulations are 13 inch minimum with a 5 possession limit per person per day-- from the Coastal Fisherman]

http://www.coastal-fisherman.com/breaking-news.cfm?id=7B571339-5056-9F21-09BD4639EA33B97B

Black sea bass like cooler waters, no doubt about it - from my experience, temperatures from 50-70 degrees Fahrenheit seems to be about right. The most productive sea bass fishing will be in the spring or fall, but you can easily limit out in the summer months. In the summer, the keeper sea bass will only be found out in the ocean. Granted, you will probably catch some in the back bays, although this is more for fun with the kids. It is seldom that you will catch a legal sea bass in the bays, mostly due to the fact that the water temperatures are too warm in the summer months.

As I mentioned, you need structure to catch sea bass. Out of the Ocean City, Maryland inlet, there are tons of locations with structure. What is structure? Structure is reefs and wrecks - many of which were strategically placed out there. These structures greatly enhance your ability to catch fish. Make a donation to the Ocean City Reef Foundation and you will get a reef map showing all the reefs and their electronic coordinates. These maps are a must have - you can see all of the reefs, which are made up of coiled wire, subway cars, and concrete structures, just to name of few. When you find these locations, you will find the fish!

The typical set-up for sea bass fishing includes a medium to heavy weight rod with a nice saltwater compatible bait-cast or spinning reel. My preference is a Penn Bait-cast reel with 15-20 pound test, although it is up to you to decide what works best for you. As far as a rig, a double or triple hi-lo rig (1/0 or 2/0 hooks) with a salted clam or strip of squid works the best. There is nothing quite like reeling in three black sea bass at once; hence the medium weight rod. Now for the sinker on the sea bass rig, bring an assortment. Depending on the conditions, you may need anything from a 3 ounce up to a 12 ounce weight - once you get over 8 ounces, it is hard to hold bottom and to even know if you have a fish on the line.

When you find your spot, you will obviously be drifting if you are out in the ocean, drop your line straight down. Off Ocean City, Maryland, and probably the other Mid-Atlantic States, you will be fishing anywhere from 60-125 feet of water depth. Unlike, flounder, you need to set the hook quick and reel them in - they love to take your bait and run. If you are not paying attention, you will lose your bait every time. If you hit a school of sea bass, you will have non-stop action and will more than likely limit out. Keep in mind you will need to move the boat a few times in order to drift over that same hot zone a couple of times. If the fish are biting, stay put; otherwise, move until you find them. Who knows, you make even get a snapper blue, sand shark, or flounder - you never know what you may reel in!!!

Enjoy - and do not forget to take only legal fish within the creel limits. Thanks for reading and good luck Black Sea Bass fishing!!! Do not forget to check out our family-owned e-commerce website, and thanks for supporting small business.

Surf Fishing in

Ocean City, Maryland

Surf fishing is one of the most enjoyable types of fishing. As I have experienced many times, it is both peaceful and relaxing. Not to mention, you never know what you may reel in next! You can catch just about anything in the surf including: Striped Bass, Snapper Blues, Spot, Spanish Mackerel, Sand Sharks, Sea Bass, Flounder, and Croaker, just to name a few. I find that the best days for surf fishing are when the surf is not more than 2 to 3 feet - anything more, and it is hard to hold bottom. Bring a cooler, towel, 5-gallon bucket, and a knife for cutting bait. Get up early as sunrise produces the best action, followed by fishing at dusk. You can fish until 10 a.m., which is when the lifeguards come out during the summer months.

You'll need a nice 10-12 foot surf rod with a saltwater reel. Use 10-15 pound test - either braid or mono will work, although braid is much more sensitive. You can use a shorter rod, although you'll be limited on how far you can cast. Another essential piece of equipment is a sand spike. You need this to hold your rod when you are baiting your rig or as you are just relaxing waiting for that next bite. Sand is your number one enemy - if you get sand in your reel, it will ruin both your day and your reel. Keep the sand out and never immerse your reel in saltwater. Remember to always wash down your equipment with freshwater after every use - this will keep your gear in good working order.

For rigs and bait, there are tons of different choices for both. Just about any 2-hook hi-lo rig will work. I typically use a kingfish rig with floats, which is universal for many of the fish in the surf, including snapper blue, croaker, and spot. If you want to catch larger blues, you'll need something like a mullet rig. If you want to catch striped bass or sand sharks, get a rig which is specifically designed for that species. As far as bait is concerned, I like to use long strips of squid, real bloodworms, or cut bait. Artificial Fish-bite bloodworms are great, as you can seal up the package and use them again the next time. Finally, you will need weight to hold bottom. Either a pyramid or sputnik style sinker will work. I find that the sputnik sinker works the best - it has metal arms that dig into the sand bottom.

The best streets for surf fishing in OCMD from my experience is anywhere from 50th to 70th Street. Perhaps this is because it is away from the boardwalk and high-rise condos, so there are less people on the beach. You will want to cast the deep pockets. Do not overcast - there is no reason to go out into the surf to cast - the fish are closer than you think. You definitely need to cast beyond the breaking surf - remember to keep your bait moving and keep the slack out of the line. When you do get a bite, be patient, use your drag to keep tension on the line, and use the waves to bring in your catch. Once you get the knack of surf fishing, it becomes quite fun and addictive. I find that following the local fishing reports always seems to yield the best catch.

Enjoy - and don't forget to take only legal fish within the creel limits. Thanks for reading and good luck surf fishing! Also, don't forget to check out our family-owned ecommerce website, and thanks for supporting small business!

For many of us volleyball is a childhood sport that we just haven't played for ages. Maybe seventh grade gym class was the last time you really spiked one over the net. If this is the case, it's time to bring you back to your childhood, with several nets set up along the Ocean City shore that invite you to break out the ball and get a little exercise out in the Maryland sunshine.

Assateague Island

If you are going to come all the way to Ocean City, your trip will not be complete without venturing out to Assateague Island. If you'd like to learn more about it, get into the local surf shops to follow the word of mouth. Who knows, this may just become your new favorite sport.

The Zoo

If you need a break from watching the little ones dig holes and build sand castles on end, head over to Salisbury, MD to visit this great, adventure filled zoo! It's just a quick 30 minute drive west of Ocean City, and it will be well worth the drive. Whether you are 8 or 80 years old, you are bound to have a great time exploring all of the wild animals. You'll be able to interect with some of the animals and gain a true one of a kind experience with nature.

Sunfest

If you are planning on visiting Ocean City in the summer time, make sure you plan time to visit Sunfest. This is Ocean City's biggest summer festival and offers everything that you'd expect from a huge fair. You'll have the chance to enjoy entertainment, arts and crafts, food vendors around every corner, and contests. The biggest contest, and one that the festival is known for is the Sunfest Kite Festival, so if you don't own one, buy one. It doesn't matter if it's big or small, expensive or cheap, just get out there and participate in this wonderful occasion.

Winterfest

If winter time vacationing suits you better, try visiting Ocean City during the winter months. Because so many other summer resort and vacation towns across the U.S. are offering winter festivals, Ocean City decided to jump on the band wagon and join the herd. It's important to them to offer something throughout all seasons. This actually may be the best time to visit, because hotel rates drop during the "off-season", and it is marked with thousands upon thousands of lights to celebrate the magic of the season.

This is just a starting point to jump on as you plan your Ocean City vacation, undoubtedly you'll find many more new and exciting things to add to the list. So, make sure to plan a few of these into the itinerary, and get on over to Ocean City. After all, adventure waits for no one!

The Wine Regions of Maryland

Growing up in Maryland, I always thought my home state had great diversity in topography and a nice equal dose of all four seasons - a little something for everybody. When it came to growing grapes for wine, however, I didn't realize Maryland possessed the "terroir" - the special characteristics that the soil, weather conditions, and other environmental elements bestow upon a particular variety - required to produce world class wines. As it turns out, Maryland is producing some pretty impressive wines and the Maryland Wine industry [http://www.marylandwine.com/] is growing with equally impressive speed and vigor.

Maryland has four distinct wine growing regions. From west to east they are: Western Mountain, Piedmont Plateau, Southern Plain, and Eastern Shore. Just as Maryland has four distinct seasons, the four distinct growing regions of Maryland each bestow their own unique characteristics upon the wines produced in those areas.

Western Mountain:
The Western Mountain region is characterized by mountainous terrain with cooler average temperatures and a shorter growing season. This region is best suited for cold-hearty varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Chardonnay, Norton/Cynthiana, Chambourcin, Vidal and Seyval.

Piedmont Plateau:
This region is home to the majority of Maryland's vineyards as well as some of the oldest. Rich in historical landmarks and inspiring views, a wide variety of grapes grow well in this region, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris.

Southern Plain:
This flat, low altitude region presents some challenges with warmer temperatures both day and night, but varieties that do well in southern Italy and similar Mediterranean climates can do quite well on the Southern Plain too. Look for varieties like Barbera, Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Chardonnay, Vidal, Blaufrankisch, and Symphony.

Eastern Shore:
Maryland's Eastern Shore comprises more than a third of the state's land area, but only 8% of the population. Surrounded by water - the Atlantic on one side and the Chesapeake Bay on the other - it's no surprise that two of the biggest industries here are farming and tourism, which might explain why this is one of the fastest growing wine regions in Maryland as well. The warm days, cool nights, and sandy soil of the Eastern Shore make it possible to grow a wide variety of wine grapes in this region.

I've always appreciated the variety of activities available to residents and visitors of Maryland - you can be tanning on the beach in Ocean City in the morning and mountain biking near the Appalachian Trail by afternoon. Turns out that all this topographical and environment variety also creates a tremendous opportunity for a burgeoning Maryland wine industry to translate this rich variety of terroir into remarkable world class wines.

Flounder Fishing in the Ocean and Back-Bays!

There is so much to know if you want to increase your chances of catching keeper flounder - whether it be in the ocean or in the back bays! In order to be successful, there are a number of things that you need to know.

The first is the water temperature - if the water temperature is not at least 60 degrees Fahrenheit, then don't bother going out. As the water temperature increases through the summer months, your odds will likely increase. I find that July and August are typically the best months (Mid-Atlantic, anyhow) which will yield the most fish.

Secondly, you must fish high tide. Typically 2 hours before high tide and 2 hours after high tide are the best times to fish. Slack tide, when the tide is changing is a good time to take a break and eat some lunch, as the fish won't be biting.

Thirdly, you need the right fishing gear. A good baitcast or spinning reel will do the trick - make sure that you have a quality reel that is designed for saltwater fishing. If you use a freshwater reel, it'll be the last time that you use it, as saltwater is quite harsh on your equipment. Keep in mind to thoroughly rinse your rod and reel with fresh water after every use. I personally use a Penn Baitcast reel, although the trend seems to be going to spinning reels. Using a medium weight rod w/ 15-20 pound test will do the trick.

Use live bait, as this almost always gives you the best bite (live minnows or live spot will do the trick) - sometimes I find that mullet gulp works or strips of squid when the live bait isn't catching. Using a Hi-Lo rig w/ a 2 or 3 ounce weight is your best bet - get one that is pre-rigged which you'll only need to attach to a snap swivel.

Lastly, the fishing! For the hot flounder bite, which will change from day to day - talk to the locals. Watch where others are fishing - they are fishing there for a reason. Flounder are sight-feeders, so when the water is not churned up, you'll do quite well. From a boat, you'll want to drop the rig straight down and let the boat drift w/ the tide. If you're fishing from shore, cast out up current and slowly jig towards shore. When you feel a tug, don't try to set the hook immediately - let the fish take the bait for a few seconds, then set the hook. Be patient, if you're not catching, switch things up - try a different rig or a new color lure.

Enjoy - and don't forget to take only legal fish within the creel limits. Thanks for reading and good luck flounder fishing!!! Don't forget to check out our family-owned ecommerce website, and thanks for supporting small business!

Visit the Antietam National Battlefield site and feel the devastation and loss experienced during the savage fighting that occurred on September 17th, 1862, the bloodiest day of the Civil War.

If you are into birds or bird-watching, consider taking a day off to see East Coast's largest population of nesting bald eagles at Black Water National Wildlife Refuge in Cambridge.

Take a trip to North Beach and experience pleasant living by watching the bay, fishing or biking.

Golf is extremely popular in southern Maryland.  There are more than 200 golf courses throughout the state.  This means serious business for many Maryland residents! Take a day off your busy schedule and practice your swing at any of the golf courses within your area.

Fishing is another favorite pastime of Marylanders.  Bill Burton Fishing Pier State Park on the Eastern Shore is a popular destination for those folks who are into fishing.  Here, you will be able to catch striped bass, sea trout and catfish and many more fish from your perch on the lighted pier.
